T Minus 4
She read in a guidebook that it would take us 4 hours to get there. So there we were, running out the door, sans jackets, at 1am to catch a sunrise at the top of a dormant volcano in Maui, Hawaii.
Good Vibrations
If you’ve never been, let me just say that Haleakala is a place like no other. They say that it “vibrates with stories of ancient and modern Hawaiian culture and protects the bond between the land and its people.” I say that it signifies hope, offers up a beginning to a beautiful new day, and is something I am learning to appreciate more and more as my days fly by.
Hot Shots
The following shots were taken above the clouds last Friday morning, when I was standing on top of the world (i.e., standing on a little boulder that was next to many other little boulders that were (not) positioned strategically on top of Haleakala). It was a balmy 47 degrees when we stepped out of our mini van (excuse me, isn’t Hawaii supposed to be hot and aren’t we supposed to be stepping out of a hot car?). Standing somewhat erect (hey, I was on a small boulder, remember?) with a small blanket draped over my back and large camera perched in my frost-bitten hands, I was ready to witness a miracle. And, as you can see below, Mother Nature did not disappoint.
Ready for the show
Really, we’re ready for the show already
Action!
Queue the sunburst on the right…
Raise the sun in the middle…
Steady the clouds…
Steady…
And…Cut! Beautiful! It’s a wrap!
This sunrise is dedicated to Carol. You are in my heart, my friend, today and always. Aloha Kakou!
